Controversial Nitrosamines in Drugs for Blood Pressure

May 4, 2022
Est. Reading: 3 minutes

Nitrosamines in drugs—Nitrosamines NDMA are a class of chemicals found in some foods and beverages. These chemicals can potentially cause cancer, so it is essential to be aware of them and take steps to avoid them.

Nitrosamines NDMA is in tobacco products, cured meats, and some beers and cheeses. They can also form by cooking food at high temperatures. Experts link nitrosamines to an increased risk of cancer, particularly a higher risk of stomach cancer.

Nitrosamine Examples

There are many types, but some of the most common nitrosamine examples include:

  • N-Nitrosodiethylamine (NDEA)
  • N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA)
  • N-Nitrosoethylisopropylamine (NEIPA)
  • N-Nitrosomethylethylamine (NMEEA)

These are just a few of the many types of nitrosamines that exist. Some of these chemicals are more dangerous than others, but all of them have the potential to cause cancer. It is essential to be aware of them and avoid them.

One way to avoid nitrosamines is to limit exposure to them, avoiding tobacco products, cured meats, and foods cooked at high temperatures. If a person must eat these things, they must cook them thoroughly to minimize chemical exposure. A person can also choose foods and beverages that are low in nitrosamines. Some companies make nitrite-free versions of these products, labeled “nitrosamine-free.”
A person can also take supplements that help detoxify the body and reduce the number of absorbed nitrosamines. These supplements include vitamin C, magnesium, and selenium.

Nitrosamine in Medication

Nitrosamines in drugs may happen, including those used to treat heartburn and ulcers and lower blood pressure.

A common medication that contains nitrosamines is ranitidine. Ranitidine is a histamine blocker for treating heartburn, ulcers, and other gastrointestinal conditions. It works by reducing the amount of acid produced in the stomach.

One medical product was recalled in 2019 after being found contaminated with NDMA, which led to concerns about other medications that contain nitrosamines.

The FDA has since advised people to take alternative medications if they take ranitidine.

Other medications also contain nitrosamines, and the FDA is currently investigating them.

If an individual is taking a medication that contains nitrosamines, they must talk to their doctor about the risks and benefits. They may need to switch to a different medication.

Blood Pressure Medication and Nitrosamines

Blood pressure medications treat high blood pressure and prevent heart attacks and strokes. They work by widening blood vessels and reducing the force of the heart's contractions. Although blood pressure medications are typically safe and effective, they can cause side effects. Some of these side effects can be serious, so it is essential to be aware of them.
There are various blood pressure medications, each with its risks and benefits. Some of these medications may not suit people with certain medical conditions. Nitrosamines in blood pressure medications exist. These medications can effectively lower blood pressure but also come with risks. The nitrosamines in these medications can increase the risk of cancer. Over the years, regulatory agencies have recalled various types of medication containing nitrosamines.
In 2018, regulatory agencies recalled one product after discovering contamination with NDMA, raising concerns about other blood pressure medications containing nitrosamines. In March 2022, another well-known medication used to treat and lower blood pressure was also voluntarily recalled and taken off the market due to containing nitrosamines.
People with high blood pressure rely on blood pressure medications, but it's crucial to consider the risks associated with nitrosamines. If a person is taking a blood pressure medication that contains nitrosamines, they must talk to their doctor about the risks and benefits. They may need to switch to a different medication.

Nitrosamines Risk Factors

Several risk factors for cancer are associated with nitrosamines. These include:

  • Tobacco use.
  • Exposure to high levels of nitrates and nitrites.
  • Eating cured meats.
  • Drinking beer or other alcoholic beverages.
  • Eating grilled, barbecued, or smoked foods.

People with these risk factors should talk to their doctor about managing them. They may need to take extra steps to avoid exposure to nitrosamines.
