Magnesium (Mg) deficiency

Mg is a co-factor in more than 300 enzyme systems that regulate diverse biochemical reactions in the body, including protein synthesis, muscle and nerve function, blood glucose control, and blood pressure regulation. Magnesium is required for energy production, oxidative phosphorylation, and glycolysis.

The Importance of Magnesium to Human Nutrition

You don't hear much about magnesium, yet an estimated 80 percent of Americans are deficient in this important mineral, and the health consequences of deficiency are significant. Low Mg intake and blood levels have been associated with type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, elevated C-reactive protein, hypertension, atherosclerotic vascular disease, sudden cardiac death, osteoporosis, migraine headache, asthma, and colon cancer.
